This is the algorithm I run, the sincere pursuit of my life, my metric for success and the source of my regrets when I fail to execute it. This is not a new idea; it is the one I have adopted in my quest to define a good and moral life for myself. I recognize that there are many other morally acceptable philosophies, but if someone rejected the morality of this one, I would have some questions for them. Rather than asserting this ideal as the answer to some existential question, I believe that it is the DNA of every important question we should be asking. Does this idea, does this choice, does this position, respect, equally, human dignity, and is it rooted in the Truth? Wouldn’t the world be a better place if everyone were accountable to their answers to this question? If we can agree that this question is worth asking, we will still have many good-faith disagreements on the most efficient and effective ways to pursue that goal, and there will be far more ways to fall short of this ideal than to achieve it. The responsibility incumbent upon all of us is to vet the ideas that are on offer and promote the true ones. The best path forward is often elusive and involves navigating difficult and nuanced conversations of great import. However, in my view, sincere attempts at pursuing truth should be debated in good faith, and the fundamental value of respecting every person’s equal human dignity should always be at the foundation of any meaningful discussion. Every human has the right to know the Truth about the world and our collective reality.
