Open Letter to Ted Cruz
January 6, 2021
Senator Ted Cruz
300 E 8th St. Suite 961
Austin, TX 78701
Senator Cruz,
As a constituent of the 10th congressional district of Texas, I am writing to demand your resignation from the Senate effective immediately after your disgraceful dereliction of your duty and continued actions directly in violation of your oath of office. Today’s attempted coup was a shame on our country, and the weight of that shame lays on your shoulders. How dare you claim to represent the people of the great state of Texas and vote to object to the counting of votes, mere hours after a flagrant attempt to overthrow our democracy? You have shamed the tens of millions of Texans you claim to represent. Your tacit support of insurrection directly violates your oath to “[…] support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” You were complicit in this plot when you legitimized baseless conspiracy theories; you were complicit when you supported that failed lawsuit that diminished our state’s name; and you were complicit when you spoke on the senate floor in support of the criminal attempt by Trump to subvert and overturn our democracy, even as a gang of delusional thugs were storming the Capitol Building. The blood was hardly dry on the floor of those hallowed grounds when you voted to confirm your position—For shame, Senator, for shame! You are unworthy of your office!
The people of Texas cannot reasonably trust you to represent our interests when you have failed to represent our most sovereign interest. You cannot represent me, nor millions like me who believe in the United States and believe in democracy. This is not a partisan issue. Our country was assaulted today by a gang of Trump supporters with nefarious intentions, who Trump is on record inciting, on record embracing, and for whom he expressed his love at the moment they broke through the windows of the Capitol. With weapons, explosives, and incited fury, they attacked all of us, and you gave them clemency and coddled their delusions. Trump is unfit for his office as you are for yours. You will finally represent the interests of the state that entrusted you with this duty when you defend our constitution and resign your office. May the dishonor of your actions follow you to the end of your relevance.
Sincerely,
Andrew Hansen
